- To encourage and promote the breeding of pure-bred Bulldogs
and to do everything possible to bring their natural qualities to
perfection. - To urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the
breed as approved by the American Kennel Club as the only
standard of excellence by which Bulldogs shall be judged. - To do all in its powers to protect and advance the interest of the
breed by encouraging sportsman like competition at dog shows
and obedience trials. - To conduct sanctioned licensed specialty shows and obedience
trials under the rules of the American Kennel Club.
This club is not operated for profit and no part of any profits or
remainders or residue from dues or donations to the club will
benefit any member nor individual.
CINCINNATI BULLDOG CLUB HISTORY
CINCINNATI BULLDOG CLUB OBJECTIVES:
Twenty years before the Cincinnati Bulldog Club was formed, there was a
Greater Cincinnati Bulldog Club; however, the club was dissolved due to
lack of membership and interest.
In the late 1960’s Connie Thatcher and Sam Steding, an active member
of the Buckeye Bulldog Club, met through a mutual breeder, Harold
McElhinny. Sam’s parents had bought his first bulldog from Mr.
McElhinny, who gave Connie Sam’s name. They got together to see if
there was once again enough interest in starting a club in the area. The
first unofficial meeting was held at the house of Connie Thatcher (now
Connie Thatcher-Lowell).
An advertisement was placed in the newspaper and in "Dog News
Magazine" advertising a meeting after the 1970 Northern Kentucky Kennel
Club show at the Latonia Race Track. The following month they had a
puppy match in Clermont County; Carl Sommers was the judge.
We believe entry fees were $1 and James and Sue Marquardt owned the
winner. After the puppy match officers were elected, Sam Steding was the
president. The founding members were Connie Thatcher-Lowell, Sam
Steding, Phyllis Huff, Mr. & Mrs. Moody, Carol Nichols, Florence
Eickenhorst, and Nancy Juillerat. Some of the early members were, Sue
and James Marquardt, John and Ruth Cummings, Dr. Thomas and Ann
Groff, Dick and Mary Jo Miller, Mildred Childress, Gene and Helen Gables
and Stu and Ina Fletcher. * Phyllis Huff is still an active member, and
always has been a strong supporter of the club.
The club adopted their Constitution and by-laws at a meeting held at the
Hotel Alms on March 28, 1972. At one point they tried to use the name
Riverfront Bulldog Club. The name was not allowed because it did not
clearly identify the location covered by the club.
The first A match, judged by Frances "Bud" Edwards, was at the
Cincinnati Armory on Reading Road. The first show judged by Nancy
Harrison, with Neil Ragan judging sweeps was held at Old Coney Island.
Both judged our 10th anniversary show. Nancy Harrison has also judged
our 20th anniversary show, and will judge our 31st show in 2008.
Gene Gable drew our original logo. Our current logo was designed in
2008 by Barb Tippmann.
The club holds two specialty shows and a B match annually over the
Memorial Day weekend in conjunction with the Cincinnati Kennel Club
shows. We also hold a fall puppy match, and have a Christmas party in
December.
Our club meetings are held at Especially Dogs in Fort Wright Kentucky,
the last Tuesday of the month. For additional information on the club, we
have a web site, www.cincinnatibulldog.com, originally created by Tracy
Snyder. The current site was created by Dawn Martin ( with information
obtained from Phyllis Huff, Sam Steding, and James and Sue Marquardt),
with Barb Tippmann updating and revising the pages as needed.
*Phyllis passed away in July of 2010.
